My Concusion: Hear God on what is best for your family!
There are plenty of situations that private school, by far, is the best choice!
But, there are plenty of situations that public school is the best choice.
So how do you choose:
- What has God said to you?
- What are your values?
- Do your children thrive in big settings or small?
- What can you afford?
Bottomline: Your child's education is your responsibility! No matter what option you choose they will need help at home. You can't count on any school to raise your child. So the question is - who do you want to partner with long term?
Ending with how I began - I have a senior and if I had to start all over again, I would pick a smaller setting, with more student / teacher interaction, and value reinforcement. You only get the opportunity once to raise a child!

Re: Public or Private - my conclusion
Pastor Clark, you present public and private schooling as if they're the only options. I would like to point out the existence of a third alternative -- homeschooling.
Homeschooling is not for everyone. It requires a significant amount of time to invest in your children. However, you will have near-total control over what your children are taught. You make a good point when you say that "you can't count on any school to raise your child." With homeschooling, you don't have to worry about that.
If anyone reading this is interested in potentially homeschooling their children, I recommend checking out the Home School Legal Defense Association -- they have information that will help you get set up (AND they're a Christian organization!)

Re: Public or Private - my conclusion
I am so glad you choose to write about this topic. Aaron and I are using this year to pray and investigate schools for our daughter. She is 4 and will start Kindergarten next year. I always wanted to homeschool but she is such a social little girl and wants to GO to school so bad!! I think she will be in the top 10% of her class-at least to start off with. She is SO smart. I worry about public school and the influences that are out of our control but I struggle b/w that concern and knowing that I can't and shouldn't shelter her from the whole world. For us, sending our children to private school would be a sacrifice financially. So, we are seeking the Lord for the direction He wants us to go. I feel like it's one of the most important decisions we make as parents.

Re: Public or Private - my conclusion
(Don't forget homeschooling as an option) So how do I choose? What has God said to me is my decision.. My values are to follow Him. My children thrive when I follow Him. What I can "afford" is to follow Him. My answer is to partner with God.
