I have heard some great comments from people about the debate between public versus private schools for our children! The one question I have heard is, "what about home schooling?" Great question!
A little known fact about Robin is that she actually was homeschooled during her last 4 years of high school. So our perspective on home schooling is very close and very real. Here are what we see as the pro's and con's.
Start with the Con's: (these are observations of many, not representations of Robin)
- If you are not highly structured, your children can learn a high level of slothfulness and complacency.
- Children can become highly introverted if you are not intentional about having them in "community" somewhere.
- We as parents can be guilty of isolating more than preparing.
- I have seen many home school children walk away from the church, and God, when they graduate because they have grown to hate religion.
- I have watched many isolated students immediately try rebellion because they were never allowed to touch the "outside world".
Now the Pro's:
- You get to invest in your children!!!!!
- You get to shape their values and their work ethic.
- You get to go on vacation whenever you want!
- You get to choose the community your kids are growing up around! (Make sure it is diverse. They need to hear cussing, because they will hear it someday.)
- You get to teach your kids a healthy balance!!!
So, all in all, I am a proponent of home schooling, in the right situation. If you do it, make it a job, not a thought. Also check out Veritas here in South OKC - Norman. It offers a private school/home school combination and is a great option.
Let me hear from you.
